Q&A, with Nick

Define your genre in five words or less:

World weary singer songwriter

How long have you been writing and playing music? Was there a song or moment that first inspired you?

25 years. First teenage inspirations were The Smiths and The Cure, soon followed by The Stone Roses and Ride. The Birthday Party were probably the first band that made me want to play guitar.

If you could travel back in time and show one of your musical heroes your stuff, who would it be and why?

Townes Van Zandt. It wouldn't be a successful mission, he would probably make fun of me and I'd wish I hadn't sought his approval.

What are your favourite venues?

Toff, NSC, Wesley Anne.

What are your top 5 favourite albums?

Elliott Smith - Either/Or Townes Van Zandt - Our Mother The Mountain Bob Dylan - Bringing It All Back home The Smiths - The Smiths Elliott Smith - New Moon

What is your most memorable gig (playing or watching)?

My Bloody Valentine - Prince of Wales 1991. I sat onstage, between the foldback wedges with their amps pointed at my head.

Where do you usually draw inspiration from as a writer? Do you have a process? eg music first, lyrics first etc

The process is always different. I often play guitar watching TV with the sound off. Eventually a progression will come that insinuates a melody. It doesn't become a song until a lyric cuts through. Usually once there is a key line, the rest of the song writes itself very quickly.
