Q&A, with Megan (singer,guitarist)

Define your genre in five words or less:

Folk, acoustic

How long have you been writing and playing music? Was there a song or moment that first inspired you?

I have been playing music since I was a kid, but it was definitely just playing. Going to uni inspired me to make music. It was then that I realised music was a necessary part of my life and I should stop ignoring it.

If you could travel back in time and show one of your musical heroes your stuff, who would it be and why?

Probably a young Bob Dylan. I would like to hear what he thinks of the music us kids make today and I wonder how he feels about the influence he's had on it.

What are your favourite venues?

I love the Northcote Social Club, it has such a relaxed atmosphere and I've seen a few great gigs there. Also love the John Curtin Hotel for the same reason.

What are your top 5 favourite albums?

5 is too small a number, but these have been my biggest influence lately.Bon Iver - Bon IverBlonde on Blonde - Bob DylanI Speak Because I Can - Laura MarlingA Creature I Don't Know - Laura MarlingBlack Sheep Boy - Okkervil River

What is your most memorable gig (playing or watching)?

Watching Laura Marling in Scotland a couple of years ago is definitely up there. We had gone to Scotland especially to see her because we had no hope that she would ever tour Australia (it was at the start of her career). We almost didn't get in to the venue due to a mix-up with the tickets. It was pretty emotional when we did get in and we were able to witness her excellence close-up.

Where do you usually draw inspiration from as a writer? Do you have a process? eg music first, lyrics first etc

I generally start by messing around on the guitar and seeing what happens. From this an image will form in my mind that I will try to develop with the song - kind of like a movie scene in my head. This helps the lyrics and melody to flow. The image I choose is always representative of a particular feeling or experience I have had, I guess this is just my method of expressing whatever it may be.
